Basic Manners
Attention: Washtenaw County will be doing construction on Cherry Hill Rd now through August. This means that HSHV will not be accessible from Plymouth Rd and will require a detour. Please keep this in mind when planning travel to and from the shelter.
Everyone has seen the dog who behaves in their home but struggles out in the real world when they see another person, dog or squirrel! Using safe, positive, on- and off-leash handling, we’ll help you maintain control of your pup. This class shows you how to keep your dog focused and in control even the most highly distracting environments. You’ll learn how to motivate your dog to be excited to work with you in all situations! It’s the difference between having a dog who only listens when you have a treat or force them and having a dog who can’t wait for you to give them a command.
Appropriate for age: 6 months+
Prerequisites: For all classes, must have access to a computer, the Internet, Zoom and email. For in-person classes, current distemper and rabies vaccinations required. Vaccination history must be presented to trainer at orientation. Bordetella and Canine Influenza vaccinations are recommended but not required.
Basic Manners is not for dogs who are extremely dog reactive, lunging and growling at other dogs (Please see Reactive Rover). Dogs who are reactive or have bitten are not appropriate for any group, in-person class, and should look into individual training; refer to our website for more info. If you enroll in Basic Manners, and your dog must be removed for being reactive, we regret we cannot refund your fee.
