Dillon Decided: What Next for Human Rights in Northern Ireland?

Fri 8 May 2026 11:30 AM - 12:30 PM BST Online, Zoom

Rapid Response Seminar

A landmark moment for human rights protections in Northern Ireland is imminent.

The UK Supreme Court is expected to hand down its judgment in the Dillon case on Thursday 7 May, a ruling that will have far reaching consequences for the strength and scope of Article 2 of the Windsor Framework and the future enforcement of rights and equality standards derived from the Belfast/Good Friday Agreement.

In response, the Human Rights Consortium and the Queen’s University Belfast Human Rights Centre, will host a rapid response online seminar on Friday 8 May to provide immediate expert analysis of the judgment and its implications.

This event will unpack what the Supreme Court has decided, why it matters, and how it will shape the protection of human rights in Northern Ireland in the years ahead. At stake is not only the legal force of Article 2’s non‑diminution guarantee, but the wider question of how robustly rights commitments will be upheld in a rapidly shifting legal and political landscape.

Speakers to include:

·Professor Colin Murray, Newcastle University

·Professor Aoife O’Donoghue, Queen’s University Belfast

·Dr Katie Johnston, University of Liverpool

The seminar will be essential for civil society organisations, lawyers, academics, policymakers, and members of the public concerned about the future of human rights, equality, and the rule of law in Northern Ireland. With Article 2 increasingly the focus of political and legal contestation, understanding the implications of Dillon has never been more urgent.
