Hypha Curates is pleased to present Make Do / Make Space, a large-scale group exhibition curated by Nicholas Stavri. Working across both
invitation and open call, Nicholas has selected 36 artists from a remarkably strong pool of over 300 applicants, bringing together a cross-section of practices that reflect the energy, diversity, and resourcefulness of London's contemporary art scene. This exhibition will be the first to take on the entirety of the Hypha Studios South Bank space, a new 800 square metre gallery in the heart of Bankside and the largest venue the charity has worked with to date.

Taking its name from the wartime instruction to make do and mend, the exhibition reframes that spirit of resourcefulness for a generation of self-starting artists navigating rising costs, disappearing studios, and shrinking institutional support. The works in this exhibition ask what it means to Make Do / Make Space. How circumstance shapes practice, how limitation breeds invention. From the rusted shell of a 1975 Ford Escort reborn as a kinetic sculpture to installations built from salvaged building-site hoardings and repurposed foam mattresses acting as architectural follies. In each case, the artists have transformed a familiar material into something new, stripping it of its previous function and asking what else it might become, reflecting back the city they are working in: resourceful, resilient, and refusing to be written off.

At its core, Make Do / Make Space is about people as much as it is about objects, reflecting a community of artists actively shaping how art is made, shared, and experienced in a changing city.

About the curator
Nicholas Stavri is a curator, producer, and artist mentor with a strong commitment to supporting emerging artists in the research, presentation, and interpretation of their work. As a creative consultant, he advises on studio management, career development, and sustainable artistic practice. He is the co-founder of Thorp Stavri, an Advisory Group Member for Hypha Studios, a member of the Convelio Fine Art Advisory Board, and a contributor to the Gallery Climate Coalition’s Shipping Subcommittee, where he co-authored the Sustainable Shipping Campaign.
