Trees for the Future - Savill Garden Study Day
The IDS is delighted to invite you to Great Windsor Park for a day of exploration and discovery. Members will be welcomed by John Anderson VMM and Mick Crawley RSS, who will give presentations on the theme “Trees for the Future.”
Guided by John and Mick, members will tour some of the park’s most treasured landscapes while discussing how gardens and arboreta are meeting the challenges of climate change and preparing for the future.
- Savill Garden – 35 acres of beautifully designed gardens, woodlands, and seasonal displays.
- The Valley Garden – 250 acres of sweeping valleys, featuring azaleas, magnolias, and rare blooms from around the globe, including National Collections of magnolia, rhododendron, Glenn Dale azaleas, as well as Himalayan and Chinese birches.
A little on our hosts....
John Anderson VMM, Keeper of the Gardens, Windsor Great Park, England, is responsible for several important Historic Garden Landscapes in Windsor Great Park (Savill, Valley & Frogmore Gardens). He is the Lead Team Member in the Landscaping and Renovations of the Treescape within the Great Park (8,000 acres). John is responsible for 10 National Collections, 390 TROBI Champion Trees and 28,000 plant accessions. John is a member of the RHS Woody Plants Expert Group; a member of the Arboreta Advisory Committee (Westonbirt & Bedgebury); a Design Panellist for the Queen Elizabeth II Garden at The Regent’s Park, London; John is also a Trustee of the National Oak Collection at Chevithorne Barton and Trustee of TROBI (Tree Register of Britain & Ireland).
Mick Crawley FRS, Emeritus Professor of Plant Ecology at Imperial College London. Prof Crawley is holder of a Plant Heritage National Collection of Quercus at Silwood Park, Ascot. Trustee of the RHS 2015-2025 and Vice-chair RHS Woody Plants Expert Group. Mick is the Author of the Flora of Berkshire (2005), Flora of St Kilda (1017) and London’s Plants (2025). Mick’s scientific career has been largely studying plant herbivore interactions all over the world, with several long-term experiments (40 years +) at Silwood Park.

10.30 to 12.30 - Tour of Savill Garden
12.30 to 13.30 - Lunch
13.30 to 13.45 - Transfer to Valley Garden Car Park
13.45 to 15.30 - Tour of Tree Collection
Car Parking available is available and will be free for IDS members.
Within the Visitor Centre you will find a variety of catering options including, The Savill Garden Kitchen and light bites and cakes at the Gallery Café. Lunch and refreshments will NOT be provided but tables will be reserved for the event. You are welcome to bring your own pack lunch.
