THE DIVERSITY OF DOGWOODS
A STUDY DAY ON CORNUS
Newby Hall, Newby Hall, Ripon, North Yorkshire, HG4 5AE (5AJ for satnav)
and Burton Leonard Village Hall, Station Lane, Burton Leonard, Harrogate HG3 3RU
Wednesday 17th June 2026
To celebrate the publication of the IDS Trees and Shrubs Online account in spring 2026 of Cornus we are holding a special TSO study day on this incredibly interesting genus. Ranging from arctic subshrubs to tropical trees, the dogwoods exhibit great diversity of form, and the genus has become a core member of the garden palette.
Following a morning of talks at Burton Leonard Village Hall we will spend the afternoon seeing the Plant Heritage registered National Plant Collection of Cornus in the beautiful grounds of nearby Newby Hall, where we will be accompanied by the Head Gardener Lawrence Wright. We expect the bracteate ‘flowering’ dogwoods to be at their peak, but there are many other representatives in this outstanding woody plant collection. Talks will be given by Martin Deasy and Jack Aldridge, authors of the TSO account, the most comprehensive ever produced (publication of the text is expected in May 2026).
Lunch will be provided at the hall, after which we’ll travel to Newby Hall, approximately 8.5 miles away.
