HORNBEAMS AND HAZELS
A STUDY DAY ON CARPINUS AND CORYLUS
White House Farm Garden & Arboretum, Ivy Hatch, Kent, TN15 0NN
St Lawrence Village Hall, Church Road, Stone Street, near Sevenoaks, Kent TN15 0LL
Saturday 4th July 2026
Join us in Kent for a deep dive into the diversity of two important genera of trees, which should be much better known and more widely used in our gardens and landscapes. Their subtle beauties can pose identification challenges, which we’ll explore in this IDS Trees and Shrubs Online Study Day. Text for both genera was published on TSO in 2022 (Carpinus) and 2023 (Corylus) and we hope to gain fresh insights to incorporate from this event.
Following a morning of talks at St Lawrence Village Hall, we will spend the afternoon seeing the trees in Maurice Foster’s White House Farm Garden and Arboretum, where there is a comprehensive collection of Carpinus among the very many treasures of this exceptional place. Talks will be given by Maurice Foster, Owen Johnson and Keith Rushforth to cover the species in the wild and in cultivation.
Lunch will be provided at the village hall, after which we’ll travel to White House Farm, approximately 3.0 miles away.
