PETRA - Presented as part of TeatroFest NYC 2026

After a sold-out preview run, PETRA is back — this time for its premiere as part of Teatro Fest NYC 2026! We are thrilled to share this powerful, intimate, and newly expanded experience with you, running March 27 - April 19 at ID Studio Theater.

About the Play:

Petra returns to New York for her father’s funeral, but what begins as a short visit becomes a life-changing decision. Searching for direction, she accepts a job at a juvenile correctional facility, unaware of how the emotional toll will unravel her sense of self and strain her relationship with Diego, her partner.

The play was born out of ID Studio Theater’s research into the now-shuttered Spofford Juvenile Detention Centerin Hunts Point. Drawing from that history, PETRA examines the personal cost of structural violence, institutional silence, and the aftermath of bearing witness.

As silence grows between Petra and Diego, she falls deeper into depression. Yet in the midst of chaos, she discovers small ways to save herself. PETRA is a moving portrait of love, loss, and the quiet, radical act of choosing to stay alive.

Audiences will move through all three levels of ID Studio Theater as Petra’s story unfolds, surrounded by light, sound, and the aromas of Petra’s cooking that bring her world to life.

After the performance, the space shifts. The lights soften. The set opens. We invite you to remain with us for a post show gathering included with your ticket, where bites and drinks will be offered, catered by Bronx based Brunch at Zion’s, a farm to table culinary experience rooted in intention, community, and care. The cast joins the room. Conversations begin. Strangers speak to one another.

In a play that wrestles with isolation and silence, the evening ends in connection. We believe theater does not have to end at applause. It can continue at the table.

Sobre la obra:

Petra regresa a Nueva York para el funeral de su padre, pero lo que comienza como una breve visita se convierte en una decisión que cambiará su vida. Buscando un rumbo, acepta un trabajo en un centro de corrección juvenil, sin imaginar cómo la carga emocional irá desgarrando su sentido de sí misma y tensando su relación con Diego, su pareja.

La obra nació de la investigación de ID Studio Theater sobre el ahora cerrado Centro de Detención Juvenil Spofford en Hunts Point. A partir de esa historia, PETRA examina el costo personal de la violencia estructural, el silencio institucional y las secuelas de ser testigo.

A medida que el silencio crece entre Petra y Diego, ella se hunde más en la depresión. Sin embargo, en medio del caos, descubre pequeñas formas de salvarse a sí misma. PETRA es un retrato conmovedor del amor, la pérdida y el acto silencioso y radical de elegir seguir viva.
