Service mapping is a core skill in service design. This practical course goes beyond theory, giving you hands-on experience with mapping tools and the critical thinking required to design effective services.

In this course you will learn about:

  • Different types of service maps and when to use them

  • Step by step process of how to map

  • How to gather data for a map

  • Mapping tools and how to use them

  • Using maps to identify opportunities, waste, gaps and dependencies

  • User research with and for maps

  • Service maps as a collaboration and communication tool

  • Tips for making your maps look good

  • Benefits and disadvantages of maps

We will look at many examples of different maps including

  • user journey maps

  • service blueprints

  • service landscape mapping

  • stakeholder mapping

  • user needs

We encourage everyone to bring a map that you are working on, or one that you’ve used recently, so that we can look at a broad range of maps, focus on particular challenges and questions each person is facing and make the course relevant and applied to each person’s role.

This is a blog post about how to create a service map which reflects our approach to mapping.

This course is relevant for designers, researchers, product people, policy people, delivery people, BAs, data, developers and technologists - anyone working in digital products and services in Government.

We will take a learning-by-doing approach. There will be a bit of theory but mainly lots of interactive exercises and activities in small groups, with time for reflection and sharing.

Attendees will not need to prepare anything, and no prior knowledge is required. There will be a 15 min break in each session.

We have a few subsidised or free tickets available. If you’re Black, disabled, trans, First Nations, not university educated, or if you’re working in the climate space - get in touch ucdtrainingcourse@gmail.com

We have a template justification letter to attend, which you're welcome to use.
