Join us for an insightful PowerHour with Paul Clarkson, Senior Lecturer in Social Care, University of Manchester as he advises how social care organisations can tap into research funding that will help them innovate.
This session will explain the nature of academic research with England's primary research funder, NIHR (National Institute for Health and Care Research) and how social care providers can engage in and contribute to social care research, as well as initiate their own research in collaboration with university researchers.
In this session, you will learn:
- the difference between formal research and ‘intelligence’ for providers
- how to access support in developing your research ideas and applying for research funding
- the importance of demonstrating a 'pathway to impact' in the social care sector for applied research funded by NIHR.
- the difference between research funding intended to assist with the aforementioned points and other sources of funding, that you may need to support your business, which fall outside the scope of what research funding will allow
Paul is a social care researcher and academic and has been involved in the social care sector the whole of his professional life; initially as a community worker and social worker (in mental health and hospital settings), he then went into university research when there was very little capacity for those in social care to do research. He worked as a researcher in London (Institute of Psychiatry) and Leeds (University Hospitals) before he secured research positions at the University of Manchester in 1998. Paul’s research is in dementia care, social care routine data and data analytics, mental health support, home care and innovative research methodologies around cost effectiveness and public and person involvement in research.
