Ikebana International Chapter 1 Presents: 70th Anniversary Demonstration and Luncheon

Ikebana International Chapter 1 is delighted to celebrate its 70th Anniversary with Demonstration and Luncheon on Saturday, October 10, 2026 at the Sheraton Hotel, Reston, Virginia. Naohiro Kasuya, Iemoto of the Ichiyo School, has graciously agreed to be our guest demonstrator for this very special anniversary luncheon. This year’s theme, “From the 6th to the 21st Century: Ikebana Meets Anime,” celebrates the fascinating bridge between traditional Japanese floral art and contemporary Japanese visual culture.

Anime, the internationally celebrated style of Japanese animation, is known for its colorful imagery, emotional storytelling, and appeal to audiences of all ages. Today, anime has become a worldwide cultural phenomenon and an important showcase for contemporary Japanese artistic expression. It also provides a wonderful opportunity to introduce traditional Japanese arts to younger generations.

For several years, our chapter has participated in Otakon, the popular anime convention held annually in Washington, D.C.  It has been incredibly rewarding to witness the genuine curiosity and enthusiasm that ikebana inspires among thousands of young attendees. Iemoto Kasuya himself demonstrated and conducted workshops at Otakon in 2023 with tremendous success. While his connection to anime began simply as a viewer and admirer, he acknowledges that its artistic influence has touched his work as well. He has also appeared on television and YouTube programs alongside voice actors — whose performances are essential to anime’s popularity — introducing them to the world of ikebana. He believes that collaborations between ikebana and anime, as well as partnerships with diverse industries and creative communities, are increasingly important in expanding appreciation for the art of flowers.

Adding to the excitement of this anniversary celebration will be a special exhibition featuring 12 accomplished arrangers, each interpreting a different visual image inspired by Japanese culture. Designs will range from ancient temples and samurai warriors to modern anime films and beloved contemporary characters.
