Sogetsu Demonstration by Haruko Takeichi: “Ikebana with Haiku Poetry”
Ikebana International Chapter No. 1 will present a Sogetsu School demonstration and luncheon on Thursday, June 22, 2023 at the Columbia Country Club in Chevy Chase, Maryland. The demonstrator will be Haruko Takeichi and the title of her demonstration is “Ikebana with Haiku Poetry.” Each ikebana arrangement will be an expression of a haiku poem, joining the artistry of two traditional Japanese art forms.
The Sogetsu School of Ikebana is a modern school with the principle that ikebana can be created anytime, anywhere, by anyone in any part of the world with any kind of material. Among other things, the Sogetsu School encourages personal creativity and asserts that “ikebana reflects the person who arranged it.”
Haruko Takeichi is originally from Japan and moved to the United States in 1968. She began her studies of Sogetsu Ikebana in 1980 with Shunyo Okinaka. Upon receiving her teaching qualification in 1989, she began teaching in Santa Ana, Irvine, Torrence and Los Angeles. She holds the Sogetsu Schools’ highest rank of “Riji” and has received the Special Overseas Award from Sogetsu Headquarters. During the Sogetsu School’s 90th Anniversary celebration in 2017, Haruko received the Special Award for “Eiyo sho” from Iemoto Akane Teshigahara for her long-time dedication and contributions to the Japanese Cultural Art in Southern California.
Haruko has a Bachelor of Arts in Interior Design from Woodbury University. She has worked as an interior designer for banks, offices and retail stores. In addition to her teaching, she installs ikebana arrangements weekly at a luxury hotel in Malibu, CA.
Haruko is an active member of Ikebana International and the Ikebana Teachers Association of Southern California. She has loved art all her life and maintains friendships through her love of flowers. Her motto is “Continuation is Power.” More information and examples of Haruko’s beautiful and creative ikebana can be seen on her website: www.haruko-ikebana.com and on YouTube, see Haruko Takeichi “Color in Ikebana: Demonstration by Sogetsu Teacher Haruko Takeichi”
