Illuminati Fine Art presents a solo exhibition of the established contemporary ink artist Lam Tian Xing. Titled Anthem of Calamus, the exhibition showcases more than 30 new works created over the past two years. Lam Tian Xing is famous for his paintings of lotuses, yet for the first time ever, this exhibition will focus on works that take the calamus plant as a central theme. The artist’s focus on this plant, which represents a sign of strength, health and energy, acts as a blessing and support to Hong Kong and other regions in view of the ongoing pandemic.

Calamus was originally a spiritual grass used to prevent epidemics and evict demons in Chinese traditional culture. In ancient times, when people studied at night, often a pot of calamus was placed nearby, imbuing the plant with a poetic quality. Lam’s subject has recently shifted from the lotus to calamus – two plants beloved by the Chinese literati that grow in similar environments – to call on the latter’s strength, spirit and the healing power of art.

A Hong Kong-based artist with a propensity towards modernism, Lam Tian Xing blends the multiple layers and colours of Western-style paintings into Eastern artistry. Lam applies a free and spontaneous technique to his paintings, likening him to artists such as Jackson Pollock, yet through his incorporation of plants, he absorbs the endless power and beauty of nature.
Ink and Colour on Paper 24x27cm 2019
Admire (2019) depicts calamus flowers in full bloom to showcase the energy and spirit of the plant. Lam fills the paper with bold colours of red, brown and grey, with crisscrossing lines used to represent its swaying reeds in boundless fields. Using calamus as a central motif, Lam echoes the ancient belief that the plant represents beauty.
Ink on Paper 74 x 72 cm 2020
The black and white painting Mystic Thought (2020) depicts the reed growing from all directions in a unique and abstract angle. The dense foliage dominates most of the work, yet a central ellipse peeks through to offer a space for healing and discovery. The piece demonstrates Lam’s ongoing fascination with nature and his attempts to rebuild time and space through his observations and meditations on the changing seasons.
Ink and Colour on Paper 97 x 90 cm 2020
Whereas Shining Glory (2020) eliminates the figurative elements of the calamus plant entirely, focusing instead on its underlying structure and growth. The resulting marks are intuitive brushstrokes, a dance of lines. Inspired by the everlasting divinity of calamus in traditional culture, the work is a subtle yet profound celebration of life. It breaks through the restraint of traditional techniques to embrace a more sensitive approach to the artist’s observations.

“We are honoured to present this exhibition by Lam Tian Xing, which was originally scheduled to take place earlier in 2020 but was postponed due to the ongoing health crisis brought on by Covid-19. During this unprecedented and challenging time, we have been glad to witness an important breakthrough in the artist’s creativity and career. It is an important moment to convey the power of art and bring vitality to Hong Kong and the world. Calamus painted by Lam Tian Xing is truly the aspiration of art as a utopia.” Sage Lam, Director of Illuminati Fine Art

About Lam Tian Xing
Lam Tian Xing was born in Fuzhou City in 1963 and migrated to Hong Kong in 1984. He has continued his creative Chinese paintings and has been active in the art world of Hong Kong ever since. In 1989, he studied at the School of Chinese Painting Department of the Central Academy of Fine Arts. In the late 1980s, he was influenced by the trends of Western modern art and gradually began to explore his own artistic language. By deconstructing the elements of Chinese painting, he has sought the contemporary meaning of traditional landscape painting in striped colours and compositions. During the process of experimentation, he retained the use of brush strokes and ink to inherit the soul and essence of Chinese painting. Lam has uniquely transformed traditional ink paintings into the contemporary realm and has been hugely influential on younger generation of Chinese ink artists.
Lam has held solo exhibitions in many major cities around the world including Beijing, Hong Kong, New York, Berlin, Bremen, Milan, Singapore, Taipei, Seoul and many other places. His artworks have been frequently exhibited at the Hundred-Year Chinese Painting Exhibition, the National Exhibition of Fine Arts, Shenzhen International Ink Painting Biennale, as well as more than a hundred joint exhibitions globally. Works of Lam are also held by the National Art Museum of China, Tibet Museum of Art, National Painting Institute, Guangzhou Art Museum, Shenzhen Art Museum, Hong Kong Museum of Art, Hong Kong Heritage Museum, the Government House, the Hong Kong Trade Development Council in Washington, Credit Suisse and the Hong Kong Bank of China, along with numerous institutions and private collectors worldly.
Lam Tian Xing is currently the chairman of the China Hong Kong Association and the Hong Kong International Exchange of Artist and Culture Association. He is a member of the Chinese Artists Association and Chinese Painting Institute; the Vice-Chairman of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area Artist Union; a judge of the 13th National Exhibition of Fine Arts, China 2019 (Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan regions of China) (Oversea Chinese artists); member of the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles; and the Election Committee of the Chief Executive Election (representative of cultural circles).
