Maggot Mind is a one man play that follows Johnathan, who for years has secluded himself in a self imposed isolation sanctuary dubbed “The Paradise”. Trapped by his relentless battle with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), and driven by his overwhelming fears of contamination and death, he has withdrawn from the world and has descended into a life of reclusion.

Despite all of this, there is only one special soul out there who can truly say that they know Johnathan more than anybody else, Phoenix, his life sized companion doll. But as Johnathan’s mental and physical health deteriorates, news of his mother’s worsening illness forces him to confront his fears of death, the outside world, and leaving Phoenix and “The Paradise”. Torn between the safety of his isolation, where his feverish reality is enabled, he must decide whether to leave or remain cocooned in deceptive safety.

Steven was awarded the Ted and Mary O’ Regan Young Writer’s Bursary in 2025 to aid with a production of Maggot Mind, and we are so excited to start the process of bringing it to full production through this crucial developmental stage.
