TEST Workshop: Split Screens and Funky Scenes

Teacher: Kelly Agathos

Impro has a magical, immersive and convergence-y quality that few other artforms can imitate. We not only see different worlds come to life, but quick shifts in perspective and impressive ways in which the improvisers blend the codes of theatre and film for their audience.

Some of the most fascinating ways in which we can tell our story is through simultaneous scenes; when it works, we see several improvisers performing different scenes seamlessly onstage at the same time, never missing an ounce of information while staying in their separate world.

But how can one initiate these complex scenes without them being mistaken for an edit or the entry of a new character? This workshop will unlock a whole new world of scenework; we will experiment with splitscreens, barndoor edits and a bunch of other funky parallel scenes in the process!

Kelly discovered improvisational theatre in 2010 and instantly fell in love with it. In 2017, after spending several years traveling the globe to work and perform with world-renowned improvisers, Kelly created ImproBubble, a school through which talented teachers and performers share their vision of improv with Brussels' large international community. From 2020 to 2024, Kelly was the curator and producer of all anglophone shows at the Improviste theatre. She is also the co-founder and host of The Schuman Show, a comedy show mixing improv, stand up and sketch focused on EU politics.
Though she left the capital of Europe to make Amsterdam her new home, Kelly frequently teaches, directs and performs both in improv festivals and as an invited guest abroad and takes every opportunity she can to improvise in all her working languages (English, Greek, French)- as well as those she is still learning (Italian and Spanish). She is also very much a cat person and will start raving about her adorable tuxedo cat Marcello if prompted, so you have been duly warned!
