Gujarat Textile Series - Ajrakh with Sufiyan Khatri

Thu 24 Sep 2026 9:30 AM - 2:30 PM Hogarth Youth and Community Centre, W4 2JR

Join us for an exciting workshop with our friend, master Ajrakh artisan Sufiyan Khatri from Kutch, Gujarat.

Ajrakh is an intricate and ancient tradition form of block printing and natural dyeing. It was revived in Kutch in the 1970s by Sufiyan's grandfather, Mohammad Bhai, and today Sufiyan, along with his family and their small team of artisans, carry this legacy forward. During our workshop, we will gain an insight into this incredible heritage craft, and get hands-on to try it out ourselves.

The workshop 09:30-14:30

Sufiyan will guide us through step-by-step as we learn to print and dye under his expertise. Starting with the resist printing, you will be guided on how to use the blocks to create the intricate geometric patterns. Later the group will get to dye their individual cloths using natural indigo and madder. At the end of the session, each guest will have their own creation to take home.

  • All materials will be provided, along with light refreshments.
  • Guests should bring their own lunch.
  • Sufiyan will have some of his Ajrakh scarfs and shawls available for sale for anyone that is interested. It is recommended to therefore bring cash on the day.
