India Woven Travel in collaboration with Vanata Textiles Presents -
Join us for a unique opportunity to learn from Shamji Vankar, one of Kutch's most respected master weavers. An award-winning artisan, entrepreneur, and pioneer, Shamji has spent decades following in his fathers footsteps in preserving and evolving the weaving traditions of his community in Bhujodi, one of India's best-known weaving villages.
Shamji's home workshop is much more than a place of production. Set around the open courtyards and verandahs of his family home, it is a thriving centre of creativity where generations of Vankar weavers continue to practise their craft. Alongside developing his own internationally recognised work, Shamji has played an important role in supporting fellow weavers, sharing his knowledge of design, quality, and international markets to help strengthen the livelihoods of artisans across his community.
The workshop 10am-3pm
During this hands-on workshop in London, you'll gain an insight into the journey of handwoven textiles from Bhujodi. Shamji bhai will share with us a demonstration on how to spin natural fibres (that he has brought with him from Kutch) before the group can then have a go at spinning for themselves using spindles, and a traditional small wooden charkha (portable spinning wheel). The group will then gain an introduction to the the fundamentals of weaving on a small handloom. Guided by Shamji bhai, you'll discover the skill and patience behind woven textiles while hearing first-hand about the history of the Vankar weaving tradition in Kutch, and its continued relevance today.
- All materials will be provided for the workshop.
- Guests should bring their own lunch.
- Shamji will have some of his woven shawls for sale, for anyone who would like to purchase. Therefore, it is advised to bring cash with you on the day.
