Gujarat Textile Series - Bandhani tie-dye and clamp dye with Abdullah Khatri

Join us for a rare opportunity to learn from Abdullah Khatri of SIDR Craft, a social enterprise dedicated to preserving the ancient textile traditions of Bandhani in Kutch, Gujarat. Together with his brother Jabbar, Abdullah works with around 300 craftswomen across several villages, supporting them to practise this remarkable heritage craft from their own homes. Their work not only helps sustain traditional skills but also provides meaningful livelihoods within their local communities.

The workshop 10am-3pm

During this immersive workshop, you'll discover the intricate process behind Bandhani - a centuries-old resist-dyeing technique in which thousands of tiny knots are tied by hand before the fabric is dyed to reveal beautifully intricate patterns. You'll also explore the contemporary art of clamp dyeing, where folded fabrics are compressed between wooden blocks to create striking geometric designs.

Along the way, Abdullah will share the story of SIDR Craft's commitment to reviving natural dyes and preserving one of India's most celebrated textile traditions. Whether you're a textile enthusiast or simply just curious, this is a unique opportunity to learn directly from a master artisan and gain a deeper appreciation for the skill and patience required to create one of India's most intricate resist textile techniques.

• Abdullah will have some of SIDR craft's handmade shawls and scarfs available to purchase for anyone that is interested. It is therefore recommended to bring cash with you on the day.
