Gujarat Textile Series - Mata-ni-Pachedi beginner workshop and talk with Kirit Chitara

Mata ni Pachedi is a traditional form of cloth painting from western India, closely associated with the Vaghari community of Gujarat. Historically based along the banks of the Sabarmati river, this marginalised community developed the art form over 300 years ago as a response to being excluded from temple spaces.

In place of access to physical temples, they created their own sacred environments through cloth. Known as the “shawl of the goddess” or “backdrop of the divine mother,” these painted textiles were used as portable shrines, forming both the setting for ritual worship and the object of devotion itself. What makes this tradition so powerful is that it transforms cloth into a living space of worship.

The workshop and talk

Under the guidance of Kirit Chitara, whose family has a long history with creating Mata Ni Pachedi cloths, you will get hands on with the craft to learn more about its complexity and importance. During the workshop the group will get the chance to draw and paint the outline of a narrative design using pencil and rusted iron natural dye. Kirit will be on hand to help with your design, or you can also trace one of his previously made narratives. 

Alongside the practical workshop, Kirit and Siân will share the fascinating history of Mata-ni-Pachedi and talk through the intricate process of creating these sacred temple cloths. You will also get to learn how Kirit is helping the tradition evolve, exploring contemporary interpretations of the craft and collaborations with other artists from around the world.
