Spectacular Meltdowns and Exploded Views: Superdimensional Art and Architecture at Expo 86

In the midst of political upheaval, industrial catastrophe and growing environmental awareness, the mid-1980s ushered in a new era of experimental art and architecture. At Vancouver’s Expo 86, new approaches to image-making and spatial experience converged across exhibitions including Michael Snow’s The Spectral Image, SITE’s Highway 86, Peter Cardew’s CN Pavilion and the Canada Pavilion’s Great Hall. This talk explores how these experimental spaces challenged conventional ideas of spectatorship, positioning viewers as active participants, and considers their influence on the immersive art and architectural experiences that followed.

Arrive at 5:00 PM for light refreshments. The talk starts at 6:00 PM and will be Live Streamed.
