Elysian Park & Heights + Echo Park – 5.5-mile ramble (rescheduled)
Sun Jan 8, 2023 11:00 AM - 2:30 PM
Elysian Park, 90012
Description
This is the rain-postponed event from December 11
Elysian Park and Heights are joined at the hip. Elysian Park is the oldest Los Angeles park and it is one of the largest. There is green space and pleasant paved paths and dirt trails. Elysian Heights is a residential neighborhood of dramatic contours that are full of beauty and eclectic charm. This loop combines the best of both adding hilltop views to all directions and a mid-hike visit to Echo Park Lake and the Sunset Boulevard corridor.
If you are not overly familiar with this area, this will be a frisky, fun discovery walk that suggests how much you need to come back and learn more. For many in our walking contingent, this walk will be a satisfying wander that your muscle memory will tell you is much easier than it might otherwise be.
We meet in park space where free parking is available. We walk 3.5 miles of dirt trail, narrow streets, and a few great public stairways. Then we get to Echo Park Lake for a 45-to-60-minute break. I will identify rendezvous times and location and you can decide whether you want to picnic at the lake with food in your pack or if you want to visit an eatery on Sunset before finding the group at the lake. Then it is two miles on narrow streets, a few public stairways, and park paths to get back to our start point.
Attendance is limited. You must register first come first served for one of the 30 available spots. There is a $5 fee to register. Please register only if you are pretty sure that you will be available to do this event on January 8. Don’t book space for a +1 unless you know their availability. Please keep that in mind if you want to save a spot for a friend – it just might be better if you share the info with them and let them register on their own. If you book but then find that you cannot attend, I will refund your $5 if you let me know BEFORE January 4. Of course, I will refund everyone if I should have to postpone for weather that is too wet or something unexpected prevents me from leading the event. I will provide more specifics to the registered participants by Friday January 6 about where we meet on Sunday. I require that any participant to be vaccinated and would hope that you have a booster or two as well.
This walk is led by Bob Inman. I have led nearly 350 urban hiking events over the past 13 years. One reason that I do so is to promote circulation of my books, especially Urban Hikes Southern California. You should own a copy unless this is only your first event. It’s the holidays – buy more for gifts or donations.
If the platform indicates that you have registered successfully, watch for a follow up email from an entity called Inman’s Urban Hikes 2-3 days before the event with the pre-walk specifics and tips. Check your spam. If you don’t see that email, please reach out to me 24 hours before the start. It is hard for me to react on-time to last minute “Where do we meet” questions if that follow-up email went awry.
