We Were Here: A History of Black People and Alternative Music
Stephanie Phillips joins The Long Play Sessions and discusses We Were Here as she rewrites the story of rock ’n’ roll and alternative music, placing Black artists at the heart of a history they've always helped shape.
From pioneering figures such as Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Little Richard, Jimi Hendrix, Tina Turner, Betty Davis, Poly Styrene and Bad Brains to today's trailblazing musicians, Stephanie Phillips reveals the profound influence of Black creativity on alternative music across nearly a century.
Exploring why Black artists have continued to embrace alternative music despite being marginalised by the mainstream industry, Phillips makes a compelling case that there is no alternative music without Black innovation. Looking ahead, she celebrates a new generation of Gen Z musicians redefining the possibilities of punk, metal, hardcore and indie, and shaping the future of the genre.
