Join us at IPCS on Saturday 7 November for the Festival of Craftivism: a hands-on day of activities exploring the connection between craft and activism, and the ways that artists create visual languages that support liberatory movements.
There are three workshops to choose from as part of the day:
- Create cyanotype images using an assortment of materials with Lardil artist Sonja Hodge (11:30am-2:30pm);
- Contribute to a collective embroidery project with Safa El Samad from Dukkana (11:30am-2:30pm); and
- Design and print your own protest t-shirt with Yorta Yorta, Dja Dja Wurrung and Wiradjuri man Tiriki Onus (2pm-5pm)
Due to the scheduling, participants are only able to book into one session per person. Registration to each workshop includes a light lunch.

11:30AM - 2:30PM Cyanotype Workshop with Sonja Hodge
Learn to make your own photograms with Lardil artist Sonja Hodge. These blue images known as sunprints or cyanotypes are a photographic print made without a camera - instead using the power of UV light. Step into the darkroom to learn the process of making light-sensitive paper/fabric, and then create your own sunprints in the IPCS courtyard. This workshop has a capacity of 16 participants.
What to bring: Please bring along material that you would like to print. Things that work well are reasonably flat objects (like paper cut outs, leaves, flowers, photo transparencies, etc. We will have a printer ready to print images of your choice onto transparencies which you can use to make your cyanotypes.

2PM - 5PM Protest t-shirt making with Tiriki Onus
Make your own protest t-shirt or item of clothing with Yorta Yorta, Dja Dja Wurrung and Wiradjuri man Tiriki Onus. Be inspired by the impactful designs of Tiriki’s father, the late great artist Lin Onus, to create your own iconic, wearable design. This workshop has a capacity of 14 participants.
What to bring: Bring along a cotton t-shirt, tote bag or other garment you’d like to print onto. Paints and printing materials will be provided. The process may get messy so please dress in something you don’t mind getting paint on - and bring along an apron if you have one!
