Walking and Talking trees – Benefits for Biodiversity and Beasts with Rory Sinclair of Resipole Farm
Tue 27 Aug 2024 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM
Resipole Studios Fine Art Gallery, PH36 4HX
Description
Join us and Rory Sinclair as he introduces us to Resipole Farm, his family’s 1,397-hectare hill farm on the Ardnamurchan Peninsula.
During this engaging event, Rory will share insights into how they have approached cattle woodland grazing over the last 20 years. You’ll learn about the benefits this practice has brought to biodiversity, including the protection and enhancement of priority species like the pearl-bordered fritillary and chequered skipper. This grazing method has also supported the maintenance of glades and reduced bracken cover, thereby improving the condition of woodland habitats.
Rory will discuss how the Forestry Grant Scheme’s Woodland Grazing funding has supported these actions. He will also highlight other key activities on their land, such as encouraging the natural regeneration of oak and birch through effective deer management. Additionally, you’ll see their flourishing areas of Atlantic Rainforest and planted native broad-leaved woodlands.
We will explore the initial thought process, the decision to plant trees, woodland grazing, objectives, challenges, and benefits. A speaker from Scottish Forestry will join us to discuss funding opportunities and the first steps toward woodland grazing and creation.
