Walking and talking trees with Bruce Mackie
The Mackie family run an organic dairy farm with 250 cows, grow organic wheat and barley mostly as feed for the cows, and produce a range of yogurts under their 'rora dairy' brand. Over the years, trees and hedges have been planted to create rich habitats on the farm for a wide variety of wildlife.
Bruce will introduce us to the Aberdeenshire Sma Wids project, which supports the planting of small woodlands up to 0.25ha. We’ll hear about the many benefits of planting trees, with particular focus on watercourses where trees can stabilise riverbanks, reduce the effects of flooding, create shade for livestock and prevent water temperatures rising. We’ll look at the initial thought process, the decision to plant trees and the challenges. Come along and join the discussion.
We’ll have speakers from Scottish Forestry joining us to discuss funding and first steps to woodland creation.
