Since the invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the Russian art world has faced a surge in censorship. Artists whose work opposes the current regime have faced suppression and even imprisonment. Yet these artists continue to create, with their work often unseen within Russia or by the wider world.

Artists Against the Kremlin makes that protest art visible, affirming the existence of a broad anti-war movement, in and outside Russia. First collected in large-scale anti-war and dissident art exhibition featuring over 100 works by Russian-speaking artists opposing war and authoritarianism held in Amsterdam in August 2024, the images in the book highlight the hope and creativity that can be found in the face of violence and oppression.

At this event, hear from exhibition curator Vladimir Shalamov and The Moscow Times publisher Alexander Gubsky about how protest art has played a political role from Tsarist Russia to the present day.
