‘The mourning will last for 8 years’
After her husband’s death, Bernarda Alba, a now widowed matriarch orders her five daughters to lock themselves away for a mourning period of eight years. This lays the seeds for a domestic tragedy, one fuelled with jealousy, pain, sexual oppression and most significantly repression. As the family is gradually torn apart by their mother’s dominating grip, cracks start to emerge within the family, paving the way for a dramatic conclusion.
Public performance returns to the University of Bristol’s Wickham Theatre, with an electrifying presentation of Lorca’s The House of Bernarda Alba, adapted by David Hare.
