Schubert's Die schöne Müllerin is one of the repertoire's most complete emotional worlds - twenty songs that move from optimism through obsession to quiet resignation, set with extraordinary economy and feeling. The Cello Quintet, written in the final months of Schubert's life, offers a different kind of depth: music that seems to exist slightly outside of ordinary time, radiant and searching at once. Together they present two distinct but complementary sides ofthe same composer: one turned outward in narrative, one turned inward in reflection. Brian Stucki appears in a rare dual role as cellist in the Quintet and as tenor in the song cycle, bringing an unusual continuity of presence to the evening. The ensemble brings to Schubert’s quintet the quality of deep mutual listening that animates the composer’s own music. It is an evening that asks for your full attention, and rewards it.
