Making Bridges Last Longer - Henderson Panel Discussion

This panel discussion pulls together some participants from the recent IABSE Henderson Colloquium which discussed the topic of "Making bridges last longer".

Fifty years on from the UK’s motorway boom, clients now face the growing challenge of ageing bridge stock. Many of these structures are critical links in national and regional networks, where wholesale replacement would carry enormous financial, political and environmental costs. At the same time, embodied carbon in new construction often dwarfs that of repair or refurbishment, strengthening the case for extending bridge life wherever possible and designing new structures that will last. What was once an aspiration has become a necessity. But can the industry rise to the challenge?

Based on the discussion had at the colloquium, this event (and the accompanying short report) considers the various challenges associated with extending the life of existing structures, and designing new bridges with longevity at the forefront.
