WORKSHOP INFO
This workshop is about appropriation: a radical gesture available to anyone working in the visual arts, or, if you prefer a name that sounds less institutional and heroic, plagiarism.
What you will be doing is learning how to shamelessly plagiarize, to take things that are not yours and make them say something they were never meant to express. Re-signification as a practice, as a lineage, as a tool for social and political critique.
By the end, participants will leave with hands-on experience in recontextualizing existing materials and with a sharper, more contradictory, and therefore more honest understanding of what a graphic designer actually is. Creatives make things look good and appealing, no doubt, but they are also producers of discourse, agents of change, armed with an entire archive of pre-existing visual material that is just sitting there, waiting to be ripped off and made to mean something else.
