Join us for a performative lecture and screening of Andrey Zvyagintsev’s Leviathan (2014) on 6 November at 18:45 at Omnibus Theatre, 1 Clapham Common North Side, London SW4 0LH.

Parallels are often drawn between two major figures in Russian cinema – Andrey Zvyagintsev and Andrei Tarkovsky. Both had acclaimed debuts in Venice, relied on state support, faced censorship, and worked abroad, while remaining deeply connected to Russia. However, Zvyagintsev’s films have broader appeal in the UK, whereas Tarkovsky’s influence is more cult-like.

Zvyagintsev’s Leviathan (2014) critiques the divide between the ruling class and ordinary citizens in a social realist style, comparable to classic Ken Loach and modernist Joanna Hogg. Its haunting imagery and political commentary reveal a decaying society, making it deeply unsettling and relevant today.

About the lecturer: Kira Adibekov is a curator, film researcher, and founder of Filmonty. He is a Chevening Alumnus with a Master’s degree in Film and Screen Cultures from Roehampton University, London. He was also a jury member of the CICAE Berlin International Film Festival.
