PORTLAND QUIRKIES UNEARTHED
WELCOME TO A CELEBRATION OF COMMUNITY CREATIVITY, HOPE AND ACTION.
We believe that individual and collective passion can lead to positive and meaningful change, whether at home, in a community or globally. If you love and care about something, then you are more likely to fight for it given the skills, opportunity and support to do so.
For this reason, ICA and Portland Youth Council have been working together for the past two years, alongside local volunteers, artists, and conservation specialists, to deliver a focused range of nature-themed activities and events for our community.
During this time, we’ve delivered everything from bioblitzes and litter picks to full-on nature days and Easter trails. We’ve also delivered Portland Quirkies, a project which saw hundreds of local children participate in evolution workshops before creating their own imaginary creatures - ‘Quirkies’ - that they believed could adapt to climate change and survive on Portland in the future. Our wonderful Community Crafters volunteers have since brought these creatures to life in a variety of mediums, from crochet to ceramics.
Throughout, our aim has been to help inspire Portland’s children, young people, and families to learn about nature, to understand its role and relevance, and to love and protect their local wildlife, green spaces, and natural environment, for now and the future. To date the response to these activities has been overwhelmingly fantastic.
Now it’s time to celebrate this work, and we would love to invite you to one of three special pre-event viewings taking place on Friday 17th July, ahead of a full weekend of activities running across the 18th and 19th.
Each viewing will offer a different opportunity to meet the team and chat with some of the creatives and volunteers involved.
