Abstract:  In this lively talk, Ed Skoudis will discuss pivotal moments in the history of vulnerabilities used in major breaches, and the valuable modern-day lessons we can all learn from them. From memory corruption bugs to injection attacks, from AI manipulation to upcoming potential nightmares and much more, Ed will share stories and insights from his work in penetration testing, incident handling, and expert witness services in large scale breaches, with the goal of better understanding various classes of systemic cybersecurity bugs, how to avoid them, and where the world of exploitation is headed up to 2033.

Bio.: Ed is a SANS Fellow, author, and instructor who has trained over 20,000 cyber security professionals in the art of penetration testing and incident response. Ed is an expert witness who is often called in to analyze large-scale breaches. Speaker # 2: J.D. Butt, V.P. of Technology, Nexum

Title:  Don’t Get Plundered: Adventures and Observations in Providing Cybersecurity Solutions

Abstract: “In this rip-roarin’ tale of the digital frontier, we embark on a perilous journey through the wilds of cyberspace, where the rivers of data flow fast and treacherous, and the varmints of villainy—hackers, phishers, and sundry scoundrels—lurk in the shadows of the virtual underbrush.

With a steamboat’s steam and a prospector’s grit, our intrepid band of cyber-pilots, armed with firewalls and cryptographic compasses, navigate the choppy waters of the Internet, dodgin’ malware whirlpools and the snares of deceitful links. Herein lies a chronicle of their battles against the black-hatted brigands who’d plunder the gold of personal particulars, a yarn spun with the humor of human folly and the marvel of modern machinery.

It’s a tale to make you laugh, ponder, and check your passwords twice, for in this newfangled age, the truest adventure is keepin’ your digital bacon out of the skillet!”

Bio: J.D. Butt has over 30 years’ experience designing, testing, and implementing secure architectures for networks, application deployments, and software. J.D. has been with Nexum since 2004, and directs Nexum’s managed services offerings, internal IT, and ensures that Nexum’s best-of-breed technology selections are made based on actual testing and verification.

J.D. designed Nexum’s managed security services (MSSP division) standards, processes, procedures, and much of the technology back-end. He is responsible for maintaining compliance of Nexum’s MSSP services with SOC 2 Type 2 standards and managing the annual AICPA audits.
