Joint Translation Workshop – Comics & Graphic Novels
Joint Translation Workshop – Comics & Graphic Novels
Share this event
Join us for this stimulating workshop organised by the ITI North East Network, in collaboration with Yorkshire Translators and Interpreters, exploring the art and challenges of translating comic books and graphic novels.
We will look at the interplay between the text and the image and how our translations will be affected by the space constraints of the medium - and we will have some fun with onomatopeias!
The workshop is made up of two parts including a two weeks’ preparation period during which you will work in groups remotely, followed by a plenary in-person event at Durham University.
The online part of the workshop will launch on Friday 13th November on the Slack platform and will feature a short introduction video which will be recorded for your convenience. You will be assigned to a language pair* and will have 2 weeks to discuss and work on selected texts with the other group members. Before the launch, you will receive an invitation to join slack and a link to the video.
* Please note: we will make every effort to assign you to your preferred language combination group. However, if circumstances don’t allow it – e.g. no other participant has chosen that specific language pair, we may need to put you in a different group, which may or may not be language-specific.
On Saturday 28th November, we will meet up in Durham to hear Carolina Smith de la Fuente, seasoned EN, FR > ES graphic novel translator, tell us about this unique type of work, and to share our work, discuss our strategies, and reflect on the themes explored throughout the workshop. Lunch is provided and included in the ticket price.
