The Banned Book Slam

Sat Oct 10, 2026 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM It's a Love Story Books & Café, 83835

It's Banned Books Week, so naturally we're going to spend a Saturday night reading the filthiest passages we can find out loud, in public, on purpose.

Here's the deal:

You choose your book, or passage. (It can be any romance book, it doesn't have to be banned, we're not checking) and you flag the page you'd never read out loud to your mother. It can be smutty, funny, or both. When it's your turn you get two minutes at the mic. Read your passage, do it creatively. Treat it like slam poetry, make it theatrical, make the audience want more. Let's just have a good time.

After that, the audience will be the judge. We will vote after everyone has read. And there WILL be prizes.

You do not have to read! Grab an Audience Seat instead. We need people out there to react and vote, because a room full of readers with nobody to be scandalized is just sad.

But here's the one rule: if you claim a Reader Spot, you're reading. There are only twelve of them and somebody else wanted yours. You CAN do this. It WILL be fun.

Doors open at 6, we start at 6:30, and you'll be out by 8:30/9 with your Saturday night still ahead of you. (or you'll get to go home to bed before midnight if you're real spicy fun like me)

THERE ARE PRIZES AND AWARDS for:

Best Stone Faced Smut Reader
Should Be an Audiobook Narrator
Committed to the Bit (you did the voices, we saw you)
You Broke First
Never Made Eye Contact
Loudest Reaction from the Room
Best in Show
You can absolutely win by being bad at this.

A FEW THINGS TO KNOW:

Do I have to bring a book? If you're reading, yes. Or at least write out the part you want to read.

Do I have to have read the whole thing? Nope. Some of the best readings come from someone who found the page twenty minutes earlier.

What if I get nervous? Everyone does, and you're doing it anyway. Everyone poops, remember. If you know right now that you don't want to read, take an Audience Seat instead. That's a real option and half the room picks it.

Is there coffee? There is always coffee.

Free, but you do need to grab a seat ahead of time. The twelve reader spots will go first.

18 and up. Bring your ID, we really do check.
