San Bruno Mountain — Summertime Animals (Grassland Scrub)
Saturday, July 25, 2026
8-11am
Everyone Welcome
It’s only about 15 minutes from San Francisco by car, on the southern side of San Bruno Mountain.
Lots of open grassland suitable for jackrabbits, and brushy sections good for brush rabbits. Good spot for Raptors.
This is one of those wide-open hikes where you never know what you’re going to get. The chances of high numbers of anything are extremely low, but the trade-off is that this is the type of trip when you get something you don’t expect. For example: With such a wide-open habitat, I don’t always think of this as a place for great horned owls, yet I’ve seen them here multiple times in the early morning and the late afternoon. Most of the locations we take trips to have zero chance of seeing cougar, bobcat, turkey, or even quail. All of these species along with coyotes are unlikely, but at least possible on San Bruno Mountain, along with deer. It’s also amazing how just going a few minutes south of the city changes the world. It’s so suburban and feels so different, in every aspect, from San Francisco. Hope you can make this trip.
