COURSE CONTENT

HARMONY 101 is a new online course with James Sills and Mersey that will introduce you to the tools and techniques to create effective vocal arrangements. This principles learnt in this course can be applied in a variety of contexts, such as adding backing vocals in a band or creating a choir arrangements.  

Some of the topics will include:

-exploring different vocal ranges

-creating a harmony from a single melody

-working a cappella (unaccompanied)

-working with instruments

-creating a two, three or four part arrangement

-arranging for singers with different levels of experience 

-experimenting with different vocal textures

Each session lasts for 90 mins and will comprise 60 mins of teaching followed by 30 mins Q&A / breakout rooms. 

The course is suitable for beginners or for those people wanting to consolidate their skills.

Some music theory knowledge and/or access to a musical instrument is useful but not essential, as everything will be taught by ear.

All sessions will take place over Zoom and recordings will be available to attendees.

The early bird price of £95 is available until 1st April, after which time the price rises to £130


ABOUT MERSEY AND JAMES

James and Mersey are experienced singers, choir-leaders and vocal arrangers who are passionate about the holistic benefits of group singing. They met as members of Liverpool's Sense Of Sound Singers and for the last decade have been running open-access choirs across Merseyside and North Wales to support the health and wellbeing of participants. Together, they lead hundreds of people in song online each week as part of the global singing community The Sofa Singers, an initiative that has received widespread recognition for supporting people during the Coronavirus pandemic. They have a wealth of teaching experience across school and university settings and are currently visiting guest lecturers at Water Bear College of Music.
