The workshop will be held virtually on zoom on Tuesday evenings in September. Four sessions: 9/8, 9/15, 9/22, 9/29
Time: 7-9pm PT
Write a song a week with songwriter, educator, and touring musician Jenner Fox.
“It was like being tricked into doing a backflip and then I did it, and now I can.”
This will be an opportunity to explore the medium of songwriting in an inclusive playful environment with prompts, sharing, and a look at the inner workings of the songs we love. We will hold close the philosophy of poet William Stafford that, "There is no such thing as writer's block for the writer whose standards are low enough," and be kind to our creative journeys. I'll talk about my process, walk through songs I've written, and provide feedback for those who want it. The two hour time slot will include plenty of writing time, and there is no required homework. Just show up ready to write.
All genres welcome. Some musical experience encouraged! (I.E. "I know three chords on a Ukulele" to "I have a PHD in classical conducting and a grammy").
Workshops will be recorded if you have to miss a session!
Testimonials from previous attendees:
"I didn't even know how bad I needed this. It was such a great way to spend evenings and work honestly with other people on expression."
“I walked away with 4 rough versions of new songs! We were so engaged and busy that the sessions flew by so fast. The thoughtful sequencing of the experience was perfect at giving us time to access our creativity, mess around with music and lyrics, to learn a little content about songwriting, to apply what we'd learned to writing songs, and to share them with each other. I felt awash in positivity and creative flow, which left me glowing at the end.”
“Jenner’s songwriting class was about more than just writing songs. Over the course of the week he facilitated the group coming together to form a community where everyone felt comfortable enough with each other to share their authentic selves in their music. This intimacy deepened both the quality of the songwriting and the experience. I made new songs and new friends! Thank you Jenner!”
"Ah boy. The combination of high pressure/low pressure. "Get this done in X time, it doesn't matter how good it is, just get it done." That was definitely the approach that I needed: make something, it doesn't have to be perfect, if it is good then come back and perfect it later, if it's bad just throw it out and start over. The group critiques were great; the techniques for jumpstarting creativity were also great and I know I will continue to use them."
"It felt like taking sand off a treasure that’s always been there."
