About this event

R is a programming language that is popular in data science, and which is rapidly growing in use across research. This workshop will teach R from the very beginning and assumes no knowledge or experience of programming. It will introduce you to how to program in R. This will provide a foundation for future workshops which will show you how to use R for data analysis, visualisation, text and sentiment analysis. Topics covered include how to get started in R, data types, lists, loops, conditionals, dictionaries and files.

Advanced requirements/set up:

Please bring along your own laptop. Note that you must have successfully installed R and RStudio onto your computer and verified it is working before attending this workshop, as we will be unable to provide installation support. Full instructions on how to install R and RStudio are here.

We are running an in-person and online JGI drop-in installation session on Monday 3rd June from 11:15-12:30 - if you require any help in installing any software please attend this session.

• What is R? How can it help you do your work?
• How to write simple R scripts, using variables, loops and conditionals
• How to put data into lists and dictionaries

Dr Léo Gorman (he/him)

Léo is a Data Scientist at the JGI. He is interested in developing sustainable software for data management and analysis. He also has a keen interest in Bayesian analysis methods and multi-level modelling. Léo has experience applying data science in the field of international development. In collaboration with the International Livestock Research Institute, he has developed software and analytical procedures to help researchers better understand the issues facing smallholder farmers in Lower- and Middle-Income Countries. With a background in physics and international development, he joined the Jean Golding Institute in October 2023, after finishing his PhD at the Alan Turing Institute and the University of Bristol.

Dr Will Chapman (he/him)

Will is a Data Scientist at the JGI. His interests are in applying machine learning to medical datasets and stochastic modelling. He has worked on computer vision pipelines to support clinicians in the early detection of rare types of stroke, collaborating with NHS health trusts to ensure patient privacy is safeguarded. He has a PhD in Experimental Psychology and joined the Jean Golding Institute in 2023.
