Revolutionising Health and Care With Data: From Patients to Populations to Systems
Join us for a series of short talks exploring the role of interdisciplinary collaboration in digital health. You will learn how data and collaborative efforts across disciplines spark innovation, drive progress, and transform healthcare delivery, leading to better patient outcomes.
Please look at our Code of Conduct which we follow at all virtual and in-person events.
The panel of experts consists of:
Dr Hanna Isotalus (she/her), is the Deputy Director of LEAP, an EPSRC Digital Health Hub that aims to cultivate a multidisciplinary, entrepreneurial, cross-sector Digital Health community in South West England and Wales. Hanna leads MSc and doctoral training programmes in Digital Health at the University of Bristol.
Dr Karen Dawe (she/her), is the Deputy Director of Skills and Knowledge within LEAP. Karen has spent the last 6 years working in industry as a health technologist and is now working on building up the LEAP Skills and Knowledge Programme to address professional training needs from across the digital health sector.
Dr James Pope (he/him) is a data scientist who has worked on world-leading research using sensor data to monitor patient outcomes across therapeutic areas ranging from cardiac disease to neurodegenerative disorders. James is a Co-Investigator on the TORUS project investigating wearable devices for human activity recognition and on the CHARIOT project investigating advanced anomaly detection techniques for cybersecurity applications.
Professor David Ellis (he/him), a behavioural scientist and global leader in understanding how data and ubiquitous technologies are changing the way we conduct research and the way we live in the digital age. Working at the intersection of psychology and data science, David’s research has been published in world-leading psychology, medical, public health, computer science and communication journals with results often re-appearing on radio and television.
Professor Paul Harper (he/him), is an award-winning operational researcher, global leader in operational research and elected Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales. Paul’s work has had a direct impact on policy in NHS Wales, using mathematical modelling for example to improve cancer outcomes and ambulance response times.
This event is a collaboration between the Jean Golding Institute and LEAP Digital Health Hub. The Hub is elevating digital health capability across South West England and Wales and creating opportunities for training, research, and collaboration across a wide partnership network.

LEAPing Ahead: Elevating Digital Health Capability Through Upskilling
Upskilling in data science, digital health and related skills is essential for enhancing quality and driving innovation. In this talk, Drs Isotalus and Dawe will describe how skills training for professionals in digital health and health data science can lead to novel solutions that benefit from the unique insights of the workforce.
Dr James Pope
University of Bristol
Real-World Measurement of Patient Behaviour To Understand Patient Outcomes
The holy grail of a cure for Parkinson’s disease has been held back for decades by the extreme difficulty of measuring whether proposed new drugs actually improve the patient’s symptoms and daily life. In this talk, Dr Pope will describe how data from sensors (e.g. accelerometers, cameras) in patients’ homes can lead to better diagnostic measures.
Professor David Ellis
University of Bath
Digital Data to Improve Patient Attendance and Outcomes Across the NHS
People can be missing from the NHS at multiple times and in multiple settings across their life, leading to delays in preventative care, diagnosis, and treatment. In this talk, Professor Ellis will show how data-driven approaches combined with behavioural science can enhance outcomes for patients and healthcare systems.
Professor Paul Harper
Wales Data Nation Accelerator (WDNA), University of Cardiff
Understanding Healthcare Systems: Making Sense of Complexity with Data Science
Healthcare services face pressure to do more with less, amid recovering from challenges of the pandemic. In this talk, Professor Harper will outline how data science and collaboration between academia and NHS Wales has led to reduced costs and improved patient outcomes - ultimately saving lives.
