Facilitation as Performance - Cambridge 2026
Event Details
A Creative Facilitation Workshop
Newnham College, Cambridge
Monday and Tuesday
10th & 11th September 2026
Two days exploring ways to bring more presence, spontaneity and playfulness to your role working with groups. We’ll focus on your performance as a facilitator including activities inspired by improv theatre.
Guiding Principles
1. Training not as usual
There is no manual or set agenda, no boring presentations. We do provide notes, links, and references for you to follow up afterwards.
2. Pulsation
We’ll explore knowing when to step forward, and when to step back and let the group do the work.
3. Practice eats theory for breakfast
Anyone can run a process, but how we do it can count more than the specifics of a technique..
4. Improvising
Activities drawn from improv theatre and other group work traditions help to focus on the subtle gestures that make up your performance.
5. Being Playful
We play, metaphorically and figuratively – with ideas and processes. We learn about, and from, being playful – even with serious topics.
6. Learning Together
A big part of what makes this workshop work is the learning that happens between participants.
7. It's Not About Making It Easy
We’ll explore and experience the art of being comfortable with discomfort. and playing with ways to hold difficult conversations.
8. Being Unhurried
Setting the right pace is the secret sauce of working in teams.

Testimonial
"Our training experience with Johnnie was a game changer. The team's idea of what effective facilitation is, got turned on its head. We walked away from two very valuable days with tools and a perspective that has changed the way we approach meetings and facilitation workshops. This was the best training session we've had in a long time."
— Cheryl Ader-Dunne, Executive Director of Strategy, Leopard, Denver Colorado
