Don't Miss Our Popular Clinical Moments Series!
Clinical Moments is an in-person-only monthly series that explores pivotal moments in ongoing analytic treatments. Each session features a case presentation by a different analyst, focusing on a clinical moment that provides clinicians with an opportunity to think psychoanalytically about the material and deepen their understanding through shared insights. Whether you're seeking to refine your clinical skills or broaden your understanding of psychoanalytic work, Clinical Moments provides a rich forum for learning and professional growth.
This Month's Theme:
"Commit-a-Phobe"
A clinical exploration of a treatment that began at the meeting point of two resistances - the analyst's own pull to leave the program and a patient who could not fully commit to his analysis. This presentation traces how projective identification serves as the primary mode of understanding this patient, showing how his unformulated ambivalence was communicated through the countertransference, and how this mode of communication became the ground for analytic work.
Konul Surofchy, LMFT is an advanced psychoanalytic candidate at SDPC. Her work is influenced by relational theory, and she has a particular interest in how religion, spirituality, and mythology surface in analytic work. She tends to work with patients in the arts, healing vocations and those in the midst of individuation and their own becoming. This paper grows out of her work with a patient struggling with commitment, and examines the shared resistance that took shape between them.
Caroline de Pottél, Ph.D., LCSW is a supervising and training analyst at both San Diego Psychoanalytic Center and the Institute of Contemporary Psychoanalysis, Los Angeles. She has chaired various committees at as well as taught numerous courses at SDPC and particularly enjoys teaching Writing to Know the Unknown. This course is a blend of what she calls Countertransference Meanderings where writing is combined with supervision towards deep access to clinical work within the mind of the psychoanalyst/therapist. She has presented her own work at local, national, and international conferences. She has published a book on poetry: Psychoanalysis and Poetry: Accessing the Unspeakable as well as other journal articles. Dr. de Pottél has been in private practice for forty years and continues to enjoy her clinical work conducting psychoanalysis, supervision, and helping others with writing projects.
