Experience Victor Sjöström’s extraordinary silent drama THE WIND (1928) as it was meant to be experienced: on screen, with musicians performing live in the room. Set in the harsh landscape of the American West, The Wind stars Lillian Gish as Letty, a young woman who travels to an isolated Texas community where the relentless wind, loneliness and mounting psychological tension gradually close in around her. Visually striking and increasingly intense, the film is now regarded as one of the great achievements of late silent cinema. For this screening, guitarists Anton Hunter and José Dias will create a completely live, improvised score in response to the film. There is no fixed soundtrack and no pre-recorded music. The musicians respond to the images, rhythms, atmosphere and to each other in real time — meaning that this particular version of The Wind will happen once, in this room, with this audience.

What to expect

A full screening of The Wind accompanied by two live musicians, combining guitars, sound, texture and improvisation to create a contemporary dialogue with a nearly 100-year-old film. You don’t need to know anything about silent cinema or improvised music. Just come, watch and listen.
