STRIKE (1925) — Silent Film with Live Improvised Music

Experience Sergei Eisenstein’s STRIKE (1925) with a completely live, improvised score by Tom Williams (electroacoustics) and José Dias (guitar).

Eisenstein’s extraordinary first feature follows factory workers whose growing unrest erupts into a strike, bringing them into violent confrontation with the authorities. Bold, inventive and visually explosive, Strike already contains many of the radical editing techniques that would make Eisenstein one of cinema’s most influential filmmakers.

For this screening, Williams and Dias create the music in real time, responding to the film and to each other through guitar, electronics, texture, noise and improvisation. There is no pre-recorded soundtrack and no fixed score: what you hear emerges from the encounter between film, musicians, space and audience.

Expect 90 minutes of revolutionary silent cinema transformed by a live contemporary soundtrack — unpredictable, immersive and created only for this performance.
