How To Report On Disability Responsibly In Journalism
Mon 23 Oct 2023 5:30 PM - 6:30 PM BST
Online, Zoom
Description
As journalists, ethical and accurate reporting is a vital part of our jobs. But all too often, stories and headlines about the disabled community don't meet these standards, instead presenting an inaccurate and harmful picture that relies on negative stereotypes. In this new workshop from journalist Lucy Webster, we'll introduce you to the key concepts to get your reporting right.
Over the course of an hour, we'll look at:
- The importance of language, and things to look out for;
- The social model of disability and why it's important;
- Inaccurate stereotypes and narratives to avoid.
As always, there will be a chance to ask the presenter questions too. These can be asked in advance or during the live session. Or both!

Types Of Ticket
Live Ticket: Select a live ticket if you'd like to watch the session live. You'll receive a link to join when you order. Don't worry if your plans change — we will also send you a copy of the recording and session notes via email. This is normally 24-48 hours after the session to allow time for us to edit the recording.
Watch Back / Recorded: If you just want to watch back, please select a recorded ticket. This allows us to keep a handle on numbers and make sure we have enough seats around our virtual table. Again, no worries if you change your mind, you will still be sent the Zoom link, so there is no need to let us know if your plans change. You will typically be sent the recording 24-48 hours after the live session, to give our team time to edit.
