The Money Series: Finding More Work When Opportunities Are Scarce
Thu 25 Apr 2024 5:30 PM - Sun 28 Apr 2024 11:45 PM BST
Online, Zoom
Description
Join us for the first in our new workshop series focused on money; both how to manage it and make more of it. To kick off, Elna Schütz will be delving into how to find more freelance journalism work when opportunities are scarce.
Elna will be talking through the lessons she's learnt from building a successful freelance career in South Africa and sharing how you can apply them to your own context, wherever you're based and whatever your specialism.
We'll cover:
- How to build an international network of clients and support;
- Strategies for building pathways for opportunities to find you (or as Elna likes to call it, 'digging the well instead of standing in a dry riverbed');
- When it's time to hunt — how to find work when you are desperate;
- Mindset management: handling it when you feel like you will never work again;
- Building healthy work habits, even when you don't have work.

Meet The Speaker
Elna Schütz is a freelance journalist based in South Africa who always loves hearing a good story. She works in writing and audio, for the likes of the BBC and The Economist, across a wide range of topics from business to science and health, with a particular interest in mental health and human rights.
Elna has also worked in the world of podcasting for over five years as the lead producer of shows for local and international companies, institutions, and organisations. Before braving the freelance world, Elna worked in community and university radio making narrative shows and training newbies. She is always working on the absurdly long list of animals she has 'interviewed' and probably would like a cup of tea, if you're making one.
Types Of Ticket
Live Ticket: Select a live ticket if you'd like to watch the session live. You'll receive a Zoom link to join when you order. Don't worry if your plans change though — we will also send you a copy of the recording and any session notes via email. This is normally 24-48 hours after the session to allow time for us to edit the recording.
Watch Back / Recorded: If you just want to watch back, please select a recorded ticket. This allows us to keep a handle on numbers and make sure we have enough seats around our virtual table. Again, no worries if you change your mind, you will still be sent the Zoom link, so no need to let us know. You will typically be sent the recording 24-48 hours after the live session, to give our team time to edit.
