A Q&A With The Financial Times About The Paul McClean Graduate Trainee Programme

Fri 2 Jan 2026 11:00 AM - 11:45 AM GMT Online, Instagram Live

The FT's Paul McClean graduate trainee programme recruits and trains entry-level journalists from all walks of life for a long-term career at one of the world's leading and most respected news organisations. It is now open for applications until January 8, 2026.

But if you're looking to put in an application, how can you give yourself the best chance? In this 30-minute Q&A, hosted in collaboration with The Financial Times, we'll talk through:

  • What the application involves;
  • How to put your best self forward;
  • What the hiring team are looking out for;
  • Tips on how to prepare.

We'll be joined by Adele Jones, the editorial early careers and development manager, and Rachel Rees, who was successful in her application to join last year's scheme. There will be plenty of opportunities to ask your own questions at the live session. You can also submit them in advance to help us shape the discussion — this means we're also able to ask them on your behalf if you can't make it.

All participants will also be sent the latest version of the Journo Resources guide to applications to the FT Paul McClean graduate trainee programme and will also be sent a copy of the recording.

Types Of Ticket

Live Ticket: Select a live ticket if you'd like to watch the session live. You'll receive a link to join when you order. Don't worry if your plans change — we will also send you a copy of the recording and session notes via email. This is normally 24-48 hours after the session to allow time for us to edit the recording.

Watch Back / Recorded: If you just want to watch back, please select a recorded ticket. This allows us to keep a handle on numbers and make sure we have enough seats around our virtual table. Again, no worries if you change your mind, you will still be sent the Zoom link, so there is no need to let us know if your plans change. You will typically be sent the recording 24-48 hours after the live session, to give our team time to edit.
