JR Pitch Club: How To Find Original Ideas – And Stand Out In An Editor's Inbox

Mon 6 Jul 2026 5:30 PM - 6:30 PM BST Online, Zoom

🪶 This event is part of JR Pitch Club, the new year-long programme to help freelancers up their game, get more, better-paying work, and find a sustainable work-life balance. By joining our tax-deductible pitch club here, you'll get access to all of our monthly expert masterclasses, an online support community, weekly co-working sessions, monthly accountability check-ins, and much more.🪶

Have you ever wondered what makes some journalists stand out in an editor's inbox? Want to build a reputation as writer with ideas no one else can think of?

Freelance journalist and author Amelia Tait has built a career on being original. From Shazaam and the Mandela Effect to the origin story of the umbrella, the cultural significance of crips flavours and watching videos on 2x speed, Amelia's work asks 'why' in places most of us have never thought to. In the session, she'll cover:

  • How shower thoughts can become features;
  • How to find a hook for evergreen ideas;
  • Why you shouldn't give up on your weird ideas;
  • How to find editors that take a chance on the unusual.

As with all our events, there will also be the chance to ask your own questions both live and in advance. But wait – there's more!

On Thursday, July 9, Amelia will be joining us over on Discord to for an Ask Me Anything Q&A session with the members of the Journo Resources Pitch Club community!

Ask Amelia for advice on how to nail the perfect pitch, building relationships with editors, and more by becoming a Pitch Club member to get access to all of our past and upcoming events, a supportive community, accountability checkins, advice from the JR team, and more sessions – just like this.

Want to see this and every other event we run for just £8.99 a month? Become a Journo Resources member here and help us in our mission to build a better journalism industry.

Types Of Ticket

Live Ticket: Select a live ticket if you'd like to watch the session live. You'll receive a Zoom link to join when you order. Don't worry if your plans change though – we will also send you a copy of the recording and session notes via email. This is normally 24-48 hours after the session to allow time for us to edit the recording.

Watch Back / Recorded: If you just want to watch back, please select a recorded ticket. This allows us to keep a handle on numbers and make sure we have enough seats around our virtual table. Again, no worries if you change your mind, you will still be sent the Zoom link, so no need to let us know if your plans change. You will typically be sent the recording 24-48 hours after the live session, to give our team time to edit.
