This event is part of JR Grads Club, a new six-month programme designed to help you take your first steps into the journalism and media industry. As well as tailored workshops, you'll get access to 1-2-1 support, job alerts, and much more. Join the club here.
Your CV and cover letter are the duo that open the doors to a journalism job — but are yours up to scratch? Bring copies of your CV along to this new interactive workshop to get a full health check and recommendations for how to move forward. This session will also be followed by an expert Q&A.
This session will look at:
- Common mistakes and pitfalls in journalism CVs and how you can address them;
- When you might want to have multiple or personalised CVs;
- The difference between a CV and a cover letter;
- How 'show not tell' and the 'rule of the top third' can elevate your applications;
- The role genAI may (and may not) play.
JR Grad Club members will also be able to book a CV review after the session.

Meet The Speaker
Jem Collins is the founder and director of Journo Resources, which all started when she was struggling to navigate the journalism jobs landscape after graduation. For the last 10 years, she has helped tens of thousands of journalists at all career stages through the creation of free tools and resources, as well as delving into the data behind our jobs board to better understand the industry.
Outside of Journo Resources, Jem is a successful freelance journalist. Her work has been featured in national publications such as Metro, Stylist, the i Paper, The Outdoor Swimmer, PinkNews, and many more. She has appeared as an expert and commentator on LBC, the BBC, and more. She is also the current social media editor for Audax UK and runs All The Lidos, a resource for those who enjoy swimming outdoors.
Meet The Speaker
More speakers TBC.
Jack Dearlove is the co-director of Journo Resources, where he has helped hundreds of journalists through his one-to-one mentoring sessions, expert masterclasses, and work designing projects such as The Yearbook magazine. Outside of this, he has extensive journalism experience, starting his career in BBC local radio, before going on to hold senior newsroom positions at The Sun, London Evening Standard, and Metro. He has now crossed the divide into marketing. Both inside and outside of journalism, Jack has extensive experience as an interviewer on recruitment panels.
