How To Cover Trans Issues Through Journalism

Have you ever wanted to use your journalism to provide accurate coverage for the trans community, but felt unsure on how best to go about it? Do you feel conscious of using the correct terminology and not making any faux-pas in your pieces? 

Quinn Rhodes is a freelance journalist and trans man who covers the trans experience in his work for publications including VICE, Mashable, Cosmopolitan, Gay Times, and Metro. Whether it's politics, sex education policy, health and hormones, or using pop culture to talk about HIV, Quinn is unafraid to tackle things head on. 

In this new workshop on How To Cover Trans Issues Through Journalism, Quinn will give established cisgender journalists his best advice so they can write more accurately about trans topics including the importance of accurate language when discussing trans issues, how to make your coverage of other topics trans-inclusive, and how to find and talk to trans sources. In the session, Quinn will cover:

• Why the way that cis journalists (whose gender matches their sex assigned at birth) write about trans people matters;
• Best practices for writing about trans people;
• How to talk to actual trans people and find case studies;
• Trans-inclusivity, even when you're not just talking about 'trans issues';
• Helpful resources for you to take away and inform your writing practice;
• A safe space for cis journalists to ask their questions to a trans journalist who understands the challenge from both perspectives.

Quinn Rhodes is a freelance journalist, sex writer, and Professional Transsexual. His work often explores sexual health, bodily autonomy, and reproductive justice, and his journalism aims to change how people think and talk about sex and gender. His newsletter, Genderbent, is dedicated to nerdy and nuanced conversations about gender and (trans)masculinity. Quinn brings an unapologetically queer and decidedly anti-capitalist lens to his work, and has written for publications including VICE, Mashable, Cosmopolitan, Gay Times, and Metro. He is currently putting together a list of every time HIV-prevention medication PrEP has been mentioned in a piece of mainstream media, and he never leaves the flat without a book in his bag.

Types Of Ticket

Live Ticket: Select a live ticket if you'd like to watch the session live. You'll receive a Zoom link to join when you order. Don't worry if your plans change though – we will also send you a copy of the recording and session notes via email. This is normally 24-48 hours after the session to allow time for us to edit the recording.

Watch Back / Recorded: If you just want to watch back, please select a recorded ticket. This allows us to keep a handle on numbers and make sure we have enough seats around our virtual table. Again, no worries if you change your mind, you will still be sent the Zoom link, so no need to let us know if your plans change. You will typically be sent the recording 24-48 hours after the live session, to give our team time to edit.
