Juggling Journalism With Your Job – How To Make It Work
Wed 10 Mar 2021 6:00 PM - 7:15 PM GMT
Online, Zoom
Description
Wondering if it's possible to juggle your journalism career with other things? Our panel is here to prove that it's both possible and sustainable. We'll be looking at how you can successfully balance a journalism career with other industries and even full-time jobs, exploring how you can make it work for you in the long-term, or how you can use it as leverage for a full-time journalism career.
This hour-long session will feature a moderated discussion from our panel, with a focus on practical tips and advice, along with plenty of time to ask your own questions, which can be submitted in advance. We'll look at how you can manage freelancing alongside a full-time job, what skills and benefits other part-time jobs can bring to a journalistic career, and where to find support and community.
Our expert panel features:
- Lorraine Gibson, who has worked as a teaching assistant alongside her journalism for a decade, and is now writing a book;
- Michele Theil, who previously juggled a marketing job and freelancing, and now works at MyLondon;
- Rik Worth, a journalist and comic book writer who also works part-time.
Everyone who signs up for this session will receive a copy of the recording to watch back at their leisure, as well as workshop notes of any key takeaways or resources.
If you're unable to afford this session for any reason, please get in touch with jem@journoresources.org.uk and we will arrange to send a ticket free of charge.
Michele Theil is a freelance journalist specialising in culture, race, LGBT issues, and investigative journalism. She has bylines in Women’s Health, gal-dem, VICE, Aurelia Magazine, Insider, and more.
Lorraine Gibson has been writing the heck out of everything under the sun for more than 20 years, starting on regional newspapers and magazines. Fed up juggling full-time work and family life, she finally shut my eyes and leapt into the world of freelancing.
Lorraine worked part-time as a Teaching Assistant in my daughters’ school – just in case – and ended up loving both. You see the world from a wonderful new perspective talking to six-year-olds all day! At the same time, she's since had articles in Metro, Drapers, DorsetBizNews, Telegraph, Lacuna Voices, Dorset Life, Closer and more. She has also just signed her first book deal.
Rik Worth is a journalist, comic book writer and journalist whose work has appeared in The Independent, Byline Times, Metro, Prospect Magazine and more. He is the co creator of the HOCUS POCUS comic series and his first book, THE CREATORS OF BATMAN: BOB, BILL AND THE DARK KNIGHT, is out at the end of April.
